What should an MF tractor service checklist cover before hay or harvest season?

When hay or harvest season arrives, there is no spare time. The weather decides your workdays, and a tractor that won’t start costs you more than a repair bill ever will.

A good service checklist helps you avoid that. It is a simple list of things to check and fix while the paddock is still quiet. Here is what your Massey Ferguson tractor service checklist should cover.

Why Service Before the Season, Not During It

Hay and harvest work means long days and heavy loads. MF tractors are built for that, but they still need regular care to keep going.

Servicing before the season gives you time to fix problems calmly. You can order parts, book the workshop, and get your tractor back without losing a good day in the paddock.

Start With the Manufacturer’s Service Schedule

The first item on your checklist is the manufacturer’s recommended service. MF tractors are made to handle weather and wear, but regular servicing is the best guide to keep them running smoothly.

Check the hours or time since your last service. If it is due, or close to due, get it done before the season starts.

    Check Your Filters

Filters protect your tractor while it works hard. Your checklist should cover the air, fuel, oil and hydraulic filters.

B&B Machinery stocks Donaldson filters for all four types. If any filter is due, you can get it sorted before the season, not halfway through it.

Think About the Jobs Your Tractor Will Do

Different jobs put different stress on a tractor. MF tractors are commonly used for:

Loader work: If the loader will be busy this season, tell your service team so they can focus on the parts that carry the load.

Field preparation: Paddock work often comes first, so get your service done before it starts.

Towing: If you’ll be towing heavy loads, mention it when you book so the service matches the work.

Slashing: Slashing means long hours, so check your service is up to date before you begin.

Feeding out: Feed-out runs happen day after day, and a regular service helps keep your tractor reliable.

Spraying: If you spray with an MF sprayer, tell your service team, because the tractor and sprayer work as a pair.

Look at the work you have coming up and tell your service team. If most of your season is loader work and towing, they can pay extra attention to the parts doing the hard work.

Check the Tractor and Your Hay Machinery as a Team

During hay season your tractor rarely works alone. It pulls and powers balers, mower conditioners, tedders and rakes. B&B Machinery supplies MF hay machinery including small square balers, large square balers, round balers, mower conditioners, tedders, rakes and swathers.

When you book your tractor service, ask about the machines it will be hooked up to. A tractor that is ready but paired with an untested baler can still leave you stuck.

Sort Your Parts Before You Need Them

Parts are where seasons are won or lost. B&B Machinery carries a large range of parts in stock for both current and older machinery. If something isn’t on the shelf, the team can source most items within a short time.

Even so, it’s easier to order early. Check what your service needs, and ask about genuine MF parts so you have what you need before the first cut.

Choose How You Get It Serviced

B&B Machinery has a fully equipped workshop and a mobile service unit. Your service is handled by highly trained technicians using the latest technology.

Both options help you cut downtime. You can bring the tractor to the workshop on Anzac Avenue in Toowoomba, or ask about the mobile service unit if the tractor is hard to move.

    Your Quick Pre-Season Checklist

    • Check when the tractor was last serviced and follow the manufacturer’s schedule

    • Check the air, fuel, oil and hydraulic filters

    • Think about the jobs ahead: loader work, towing, slashing, feeding out or spraying

    • Check that your tractor suits your hay machinery

    • Order genuine parts early

    • Book the workshop or mobile service unit before the busy period

Get the Tractor Ready While the Paddock Is Quiet

The best time to service your MF tractor is before you need it. A little time now means fewer breakdowns, fewer rushed repairs and more good days making hay.

B&B Machinery has been a family business supporting rural customers on the Eastern Darling Downs since 1990. Call the team in Toowoomba on (07) 4630 2000, email enquiries@bbmachinery.com.au, or visit the contact us page to book your service today.
