Why Variable Chamber Round Balers Are Changing the Game?
Posted by Richard Watts on
Variable chamber round balers are changing the game because they give farmers control over bale size and density. It saves time, reduces waste, and makes the whole bailing process a whole lot smoother on the field.
What Makes Variable Chamber Balers So Useful?
A variable chamber round baler allows you to work on various crops and conditions. Whereas, fixed chamber balers produce one set bale size. With a variable chamber baler, you can change the bale diameter depending on what you’re harvesting and how you plan to use it.
Larger bales save time and reduce wrapping costs, whereas smaller ones are easy to move and store. The variable chamber does both without the need of a small round hay baler.
Massey Ferguson RB Series: Built for Aussie Conditions
Massey Ferguson’s RB 4160V and RB 4180V balers are designed to handle the demands of Australian farms. They’re tough, reliable, and packed with features that help you work faster and smarter.
These balers produce round bales from 0.9m up to 1.60m or 1.80m in diameter, depending on the model. The pick-up system comes in 2.00m, 2.25m, or 2.40m widths. These balers work very silently, so no unnecessary noise when you’re just trying to get through the day.
Consistent Bale Density with CPS
One of the standout features is Massey Ferguson’s Constant Pressure System (CPS). It starts with spring tension during the early stage of bale formation. Once the core is built, hydraulics take over and increase pressure until the bale is complete.
This keeps the surface pressure steady throughout the cycle. The result is a firm, uniform bale that’s easier to handle and store. Depending on the model, the hydraulic system can reach up to 140 or 180 bar of pressure.
Easy Controls from the Cab
Operating these balers is straightforward. The E-Link Control unit gives you a clear view of what’s happening. You can adjust knife settings, bale pressure, size, and net layers, all from the seat.
There’s also a visual indicator for chamber filling, plus counters for bale totals and customer jobs. You can use your tractor’s screen to manage everything in one place.
You can also export job data via USB. Handy for contractors or anyone tracking performance across different fields.
Smooth Crop Flow and High-Speed Feeding
The camless pick-up system uses five tine bars spaced just 64mm apart. That gives you smooth crop flow, even at higher speeds. The pick-up sits close to the rotor, which helps reduce blockages.
There’s also a reinforced crop press roller with a rake to guide material into the chamber. Heavy-duty tines are built to handle silage and rough conditions without wearing out too quickly.
Cutting That Saves Time and Improves Quality
The Xtracut system is available with 13, 17, or 25 knives. These are some of the longest knives on the market, and they’re designed to make sure nothing slips through uncut.
The controller gets safe access to the knives directly from the cab. From here they can choose one set, both, or disengage them entirely. You pack more in each bale, meaning fewer trips and faster project delivery.
Hydroflexcontrol: No More Blockages
Blockages slow everything down. Massey Ferguson’s Hydroflexcontrol system helps prevent that. It works in two stages.
First, the floor cushions automatically to clear minor jams. This keeps you moving without stopping. If a bigger blockage happens, you can lower the feed table floor hydraulically from the cab. That clears the path and gets you back to work fast.
Built for Durability and Easy Maintenance
The balers use four seamless, double-ply belts with stretch-resistant cores. They grip the bale well and hold up under pressure.
The chamber design includes a sliding tailgate that moves as the bale grows. That reduces pressure on the intake and spreads force evenly across the system. It also lowers power needs, which helps save fuel.
